Alopecian Mother's Fear: Her Babies Hair

A few weeks ago, I posted a picture of my daughter's natural hair on my Facebook page. Being that I have Alopecia, I always fear that it may happen to one of my children (I have three). Two of my babies have long hair while the other prefers his nice & short. I take extra care when caring for their hair to avoid any type of hair loss. When I was younger, no one could tame my wild, frizzy curls so I received my first perm when I was in the sixth grade. Thinking back, I wish a perm never touched my hair because I feel that this may have caused the development of Alopecia Areata. I am so thankful for the times that we live in now where there's a large source of information on how to care for natural hair down to the exact hair type. I search for most of my help on NaturallyCurly.com

I made a vow to not ever put any chemicals in my daughter's hair and to teach her how to embrace and care for natural hair. I only use a handful of products on my babies hair where some are natural and all are alcohol-free. The products that I mainly use is Mixed Chicks, Carol's Daughter, Creme of Nature Argan Oil collection (use when pockets are tight...lol), Shea Moisture, and Moroccan Oil.

I use a different regime for my daughter and my son because they have different hair textures. My daughter's hair is Type 3C between 18-20" in length, and my son is Type 4A between 8-9" in length.

Daughter's Hair Regime:
I wash her hair once a week with Mixed Chicks Shampoo, Deep Conditioner, and Leave-In Conditioner. I leave the Deep Conditioner on for about 10-20 minutes and once a month I let her sit under the dryer for a deeper condition mixed with Moroccan Oil treatment.
For curly/wavy styling (ponytails): I use Carol's Daughter Marguerite's Magic and Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk. Throughout the week, I allow her to lightly spray her hair with conditioner water (10% Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner diluted with water in a spray bottle) to revive the curls. I do not use too much product on her hair because it will weighed down too quickly.
For straight styling: I follow the same wash pattern as above and skip the Mixed Chicks Conditioner. I spray her hair with Luster's Pink Glosser and dry the hair in section with an hair dryer. When all dry, I apply the Carol's Daughter Marguerite's Magic around the edges of her hair. In small sections, I spray the Luster's Pink Glosser and flat iron the hair straight. At night, I wrap her hair up in a satin scarf/bonnet. The straight style will actually last a week, if she doesn't get it wet. No extra oils are needed because the Luster's Pink Glosser provides all the necessary oils to protect the  hair from heat damage, conditions it, and gives off a nice sheen all at the same time.

Son's Hair Regime:
Now with my four year old son's hair, I have to treat his quite differently. One because he has a different hair type, two he doesn't sit still for too long. I try washing his hair once a week, but most of the time it pushes to the two week mark. The only shampoo that detangles his hair fast, quick, and in a hurry is the Mixed Chicks Kids Shampoo. I actually use the whole kids collection on him. I use Moroccan Oil Treatment and Carol's Daughter Original Hair Milk. If my son gives me problems, I will shorten the process by just cowashing his hair. I do no styling with his hair because he has no patience...lol. As shown in the picture is how his hair is styled every day.

I purchase Mixed Chicks, Carol's Daughter, and Moroccan Oil Treatment from a local salon in the mall. The other products I go to my local Target or Sally's Beauty Supply store. I hope this post will help other mothers on how to care for their child's natural hair. I am not a Cosmetologist.....just a mother who has Alopecia Totalis trying to protect her babies hair.

Tips on How to Remove Stubborn Adhesive From Lace Unit

Removing stubborn glue from you lace unit does not have to challenging. With a few simple tips, your unit will be free of residue and ready to be bonded again.

Tip #1 - Take a cottonball soaked in 91% or 99% alcohol and in a circular motion, slowly & gently remove the adhesive from the perimeter of the unit.
Tip #2 - After majority of the adhesive is removed, fill a basin with cool water and pour some Neutrogena Shampoo Anti-Residue Formula* in the water. Soak the lace cap in the water using your fingers to gently massage the perimeter of the lace to remove the build up of residue.

*I use this shampoo to clean my makeup brushes and decided to try it on one of my wigs to remove build up. It works like magic! This product can be found at Walmart and Target.

Protect Your Crown Investment With Proper Care

I've been wearing lace wigs for some years now and cannot remember the last time I actually wore a regular wig. Last night as I was washing my Malaysian Light Yaki unit, I thought about how many regular wigs I used to purchase on a monthly basis.

I used to buy at least 3 to 4 regular wigs a month, which averaged about $180 monthly. Some were synthetic and human. So my yearly cost on wigs WERE $2,160! Yes...you read that correctly. My hair loss was costing me a lot of money at the time not including the treatments that I was getting to grow my natural hair back. These wigs would last me from three days to maybe a week or two. I have a small head so the wig caps never fit and were bulky on my head. The hair shed like nobody's business, frizzed up, became dull after one wash, and would melt in the heat (synthetic units). At the time before I knew about lace wigs, I was stuck with these wigs.

When I was introduced to lace wigs, I was on cloud nine and I've been glued (literally) to them ever since. The average cost of a full lace wig can range from $300-$1000, depending on customization. In my opinion they are worth the investment because it acts just like the hair that was or is growing on your head. I treat all my lace wigs like princesses. The picture below is my Malaysian unit, which retails for $350, and she is 10 months old. So with her, I saved $1,810!!!!  She's been colored twice, cut, trimmed, shampooed and conditioned multiple times. She is my go to unit for my most natural look and she still has that bounce, strong hair strands, tons of luster, no tangles, minimal shedding, and the lace is still as strong as it was when I first received her.

Below is my routine hair care for this particular unit:
  • Wash & Condition once a week with Nunaat Silicon Moisturizing Shampoo, Hair Masque, and Leave-in Conditioner
  • Seal the knots before & after washing hair with Pump It Up hair Spritz by Bronner Bros. and Got2B Freeze Spray
  • Apply a serum every other day (Moroccan Oil treatment or Organix Coconut Milk)
  • Wash once a month with Nunaat Silicon Fortifying Shampoo to strengthen the strands to keep them strong & healthy
  • Always allow unit to air dry. Only hair dryer to seal the knots faster.
  • Use heat protectant prior using flat iron or curling iron. I normally flat iron hair once a week.
  • Every night I spray conditioner water lightly on the hair and pay special attention to the ends to avoid split ends.
  • If she is bonded, I wrap her up and tie on a satin scarf. If she's on a wig stand, I cover her up in the satin scarf or bonnet.

Is Your Lace Wig Customized?

Having a customized lace wig is like heaven for women like myself who has Alopecia, damaged hair, and other poor hair conditions. Buying a customized wig is a total different experience than buying a wig from your local beauty supply store.

When buying a lace wig in the beauty supply store, your options are limited to the colors in stock, average head measurements, plastic lace, french transparent lace, density, one hair type, and very few hair textures. One other important thing is that the hair you're buying is NOT Indian Remy hair, which means it's non-cuticle hair. This type of hair will last you about a month...if that.

I just recently designed a customized glueless full lace unit for a client (as shown in picture). My client was able to choose her cap style, lace type, density (very important, don't want to look wiggish), color, hair type, texture, and length. I almost forgot to mention that the lace wig will last up to a year or longef if it is taken care of properly. Being able to create your own wig is highly beneficial for countless reasons and worth the investment!

Quick Hair Tips While Cooking Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving is only a couple days away and I know we are all making a list of what we're cooking. I wanted to give a few quick tips on how to keep your hair fresh and ready to go when it comes time to meet, greet, and best of all EAT! These tips are also for those who stand around in the hot kitchen sneaking food and watching your loved ones cook *talking about myself* :-). I'm happy to say that I will be doing more of the cooking this year, except the turkey & ham! On to my mini tips:

For Straight Hair: Bump your hair the night, wrap it and wear a satin scarf to bed. Next day, keep the hair wrapped up in the satin scarf until you're done cooking and ready to meet & greet friends and family.

For Wavy Hair - Twist or braid the hair in section, pin and cover with a satin bonnet. Unbraid/twist when you're done cooking and ready to meet & greet friends and family.

For Curly Hair - Do pin curls all over & cover with a satin bonnet. Unpin the curls ready when you're done cooking and ready to meet & greet friends and family.

As you see, these tips are very simple and will help you keep your 'do fresh for the Thanksgiving holiday!

Have A Happy & Glamourful Thanksgiving!

Did You Know...Alopecia Areata Linked To Other Auto Immune Conditions?

Good Evening Fellow Alopecian Beauties!

I just came across a YouTube video on Alopecia Areata being linked to other auto immune conditions. The video is covered by Dr. David Clark who appears to be very well educated in the field of auto immune conditions. Please watch this video and be informed that Alopecia is just as serious as any other auto immune condition.

Now that you are educated on how Alopecia Areata can be linked to other auto immune conditions, it is time to make our doctor aware of the seriousness of it. I have been to countless doctors only to be brushed off because they lacked the education of Alopecia Areata or just did not want to take the time in researching and trying different methods.

Stay informed & Spread the Awareness!

Thinkin Bout You - Covered by Antonique Smith

I fell in love with Frank Ocean's song Thinkin Bout as soon as I heard it on the radio. About a week ago, I ran across a YouTube video with Antonique Smith's version. If you don't know who she is you must didn't watch the movie Notorious. Antonique played the starring role as Faith Evans, and she is growing tremendously in her music career. Her voice is very soulful and has that '90's feel to it. Here is her video singing Thinkin Bout You. While watching the video check out her beautiful hair.

Quick Wig Tips For Winter Hair Care

Hey Couture Beauties!

Now that Summer has past and Fall is slowly drifting away, the cold air is coming upon us quickly. Remember that dry air = dry hair. The key word this winter is MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE. Yes I have to stress this word because it's vital in keeping your stands nice and strong. The cold dry air can cause your hair to become brittle, dry, and lead to breakage if you do not keep the hair conditioned & moisturized.
  • Use a moisturizing shampoo & conditioner once a week
  • Deep condition the hair for 3 to 5 minutes with a masque once a week
  • Use a serum & a hydrating cream to seal the hair strands
  • Every two days lightly spray the hair with conditioner water (How to make Conditioner Water)
  • Wear a satin scarf/bonnet every night to keep the hair moisturized (Why wear a Satin Bonnet)
  • When wearing a wool coat also wear a satin or silk scarf to protect the hair from rubbing against the coat. This will prevent breakage and tangling.

Beyonce's Haute Blunt Bangs

Source: USA Today
Beyonce and her Hubby Jay-Z attended Brooklyn Nets' first home game in pure style...as always :-). This time Bey switched up her hair and rocked a long shag with blunt bangs. What I love most about Bey is through out all the styles she has worn even with braids she always stayed with the same hair color. Check out some old pics of Bey rocking blunt bangs.

Hair 'Nspiration | Naomi Campbell's Long Sleek Locks W/Bangs

I spotted this Haute photo of Naomi Campbell on TractHerTrailHer.com. Naomi is the new face of Love Republic's Fall/Winter 2012 campaign and I just have to say that she looks Haute in every photo and piece that she is wearing. To see more pics, click here. I favored this photo because you can see the sleekness in her hair and how it enhances her beautiful structured face. Oh.... and how can I forget to mention that this dress is my favorite piece from the Love Republic's collection. Now on to her Hair....

Naomi's style can be glamourous, sexy, and simple all at the time! This style is perfect if you have a heart shaped face because the bangs bring out the beautiful definition of your bone structure.

How To Achieve Naomi's Style
Apply an heat protectant and flat-iron your hair in sections. When complete, seal the hair by smoothing on an hair serum to give it some shine. To keep this style nice & fresh for an extended period, wrap the hair and tie it up with a satin scarf. For extra protection to keep the strands moisturized, sleep on a satin pillow case.

Boosting Your Confidence While Living With Alopecia

"A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous." ~ Coco Chanel
I am always told that I hide my Alopecia well, but living with Alopecia Totalis is not as easy as I may make it look. I do go through my ups and downs, but 95 percent of the time I am Golden! Some days I find it difficult to face the world when I'm not feeling or looking my personal best. This will be the other 5 percent when I am down. I always try to do things that will boost my confidence, make me love beautiful, and put me in that feel good mood. When you find that you are down, here are some things that you can do to boost your confidence:

  • Read inspirational material
  • Listen to some feel good music
  • Call up a friend & only talk about positive things
  • Have a mini-Glam makeover session
  • Buy a new lipstick or beauty item to add to your makeup stash
  • Restyle your hair or buy some hair **The latter is addictive :-)
  • Dress up in something glamourish & classy
  • Do something that you enjoy and that will bring a smile to your face

Are You A Girl On Fire or Want To Be?

Oh, she got both feet on the ground, And she's burning it down, Oh, she got her head in the clouds, And she's not backing down

I cannot stop listening to "Girl on Fire" by Alicia Keys! This song is like an acknowledgement of the power I have to live my best life that God has given me. I had suffered depression in my early twenties because of having Alopecia, but I made a vow when I was 28 that I will no longer be controlled by this autoimmune disease. I am no longer a passenger in my life, I am the DRIVER. I choose to be happy and filled with joy everyday and there is no backing down from that!  Notice the word that is underlined and bold. You have a choice in the state of mind you want to be in.
Sit back & watch the video below and really listen to the words and Be Inspired to Live Your Best Life!

Protecting Your Hairline When Doing Lace Wig Applications

Hi Couture Beauties!
This past weekend, I've been watching quite a few YouTube videos to keep up with the latest in lace wigs and hair. I watched a few DIY lace wig application videos, and I was quite alarmed on how many ladies were not protecting their hairline prior to applying the adhesive and tape. Protecting your hairline is THE MOST IMPORTANT step in the lace wig application process. If care is not taken to protect your edges, the glue and tape will lead to hair loss.

Steps to Protecting the Hairline Prior to Application

  1. Soak a cotton ball with alcohol and thoroughly clean your hairline. Let air-dry.
  2. Apply two coats of scalp protector (see below for brands) and let it air-dry between each coat.
  3. When scalp protector is tacky to touch, then proceed with the adhesive and tape process
Types of Scalp Protectors
**If you're extremely sensitive to the above products, you can opt for Ms. Lola's Colored Band-aids. These band-aids were designed to protect the hairlines. You will apply your adhesive and tape over the band-aids.

When ordering your lace unit with Couture Lace Crowns, I will recommend that you add the scalp protector to your purchase.

Let's keep it safe Ladies!

Better To Have Two Textures Versus One

Excuse the makeup for I was rushing this morning

and had no time for the glam face
Hi Couture Beauties
I was on Dance Momma mode this evening, so sorry for the late post. Anyway, today was not a good hair day for me. Yes there is a such thing as having a bad wig hair day :-). I decided to go straight with my Brazilian Natural Wavy unit because the style would look better with what I had on today. Well throughout the day, I kept tousling, smoothing, and combing my hair to keep it STRAIGHT. The hair slowly keep flowing back to its natural pattern. See the photo at the right....I snapped this when I got home from work. You can see where the waves are trying to snap back.

The Solution: Have a wavy unit and a bone straight unit in the same hair texture. This way it will be easier to transition from wavy to straight in a matter of seconds.  In my case here it's a lesson learned.

Guess Who's Performing At The Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show?

BEYONCE!!! She hinted around it by uploading on her Tumblr page a photo of her with the date when the Super Bowl will take place. I am so looking forward to seeing King Bey hit the stage with her glam face on and take over with her over the top performance.
I would love to see her & Solange perform together. That would be an awesome show. What songs do you want to see Beyonce perform at halftime?

Protecting Your Hair Color With the Right Products

Source: Google Images
Now that we are in the Fall season, most of us are sporting new autumn inspired hair colors from the bold reds, copper tones, gold tones, and auburn tones. We must retain our lovely hair color by using the right products to keep it from fading and the hair from drying out. Read the tips below on retaining your hair color and making it last.

Tips to Protecting Your Color-Treated Hair

  1. Use sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfate-free will not strip your hair color or dry out your tresses. It will maximize your hair color.
  2. Use a moisturizing conditioner that contains proteins.  This will keeps the hair moisturized and avoid dryness and breakage.
  3. Wash hair once a week & Co-wash once a week. Washing the hair frequently during the week will lead to the color fading.
  4. Wash hair in cool water. Washing hair in cool water will seal the cuticles and retains the hair color.
  5. Minimize the use of heat on the hair. Too much heat will lead to dryness, breakage, and fading of color.
  6. Wear a satin bonnet & sleep on a satin pillow case. This is keep the hair moisturized throughout the night and keeps the hair manageable in the morning. Cotton scarves and pillowcases will absorb moisture from the hair causing dryness and breakage.
These tips should be taken not only for natural hair, but also for lace wigs. Non-virgin hair is processed with an hair color and care is needed to maintain the color as well as keeping the hair moisturized.

Hair Nspiration: Romantic Ringlets of Curls

 Source: Sophisticate's Black Hairstyles

Happy Friday Couture Beauties! I am bringing you some Hair Nspiration today to give you some ideas to go from bland to HAUTE GLAM!

These beautiful curls can be created with the use of an lace unit or hair extensions. To achieve this style you will need to have the hair razor cut to give you those soft long flowing layers framing your face. Smooth on an heat protectant curling serum, then use a large ceramic curling iron (1" or 1 1/2") to create spiral curls. After each piece of hair is curled, use a clip to pin the curl up to maintain its shape. When all curls are completed and cooled, then unpin, shake, shape, and lightly mist with a shine spray. To keep this style lasting for a few days, simply place the hair back into pincurls and sleep in a satin bonnet at night. For extra protection, sleep on a satin pillowcase.

You Are A Phenomenal Woman

This month is nationally recognized for breast cancer awareness. Currently today, Breast Cancer is the most common cancer found in women, and it affects more than 2.6 million women in the United States. I have someone near and dear to me who is among those numbers and that is my lovely & beautiful Mother. My Mother was diagnosed with breast in 2007, and it aggressively developed to stage IV where is metastasized. Seeing the challenges my Mother goes through everyday, I've never seen her give up because she chooses to live her best life that God has given her to live. My Mother is a huge inspiration to me and I dedicate the poem below to her and other women who are fighting the battle of breast cancer because you are a phenomenal woman. Never forget that!

Phenomenal Woman
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room

Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered

What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand

Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

All Access: Fashion Show in Tysons Corner

This weekend I ventured over to the All Access: Fashion Show at the Tyson's Galleria. I must admit that this was my first fashion show that I have attended since 1996. I know, I know....such a long time. I was only able to catch one show because the stores were calling my name....lol. The show I did see was 7 For All Mankind. I did manage to take some pics with my phone, but they were a little blurry. (Stylish camera added to my want list). I loved just about every piece of clothing from 7 For All Mankind that was being modeled.

Here are some pics from the Fashion Show starting with my favorite outfit:

Let Me Love You

Happy Friday Couture Beauties!
I have heard Neyo's new song "Let Me Love" on the radio for some time now, but never really listened to the words until Wednesday evening. I've been listening to this song non-stop now because I find the words to have a deep meaning. I dedicate this song to all the women who are struggling with Alopecia and are having difficultly allowing their significant other, friends, and family to love them. I know that feeling all too well because when I developed Alopecia and it progressed to total hair loss, the love I had for myself decreased. I felt embarrassed, ashamed, and ugly, so I just knew the people in my life felt the same way. I was wrong of course and it took strong support for me to take those steps to start loving me all over again. My message today is Let your loved ones love you until you begin to love yourself! Listen to the song below and think about the people that truly love you.

Fall's Sexiest Hair Color from Celeb Stylist Kiyah Wright

Kiyah Wright, Clairol Professional Celebrity Colorist Kiyah Wright, hair, hairstylist, celebrity hairstylist, Clairol
Recently, Kiyah Wright was interviewed by Ebony.com on her take for Fall's Sexiest Hair Colors. Kiyah is one my favorite celeb stylist that I follow because she always have those haute tips with hair and is very creative! In the interview Kiyah states "Red-copper, red-gold, red-violets and red-browns are all popular" for this season. Investing in weave or a lace wig is a perfect way to easy transition and play with colors this season as well as protecting your natural hair. Kiyah also gives tips on how to keep up with the maintenance on red hair. Click here to read this haute interview!
