Me & My Eyebrows

I was struggling this morning trying to free draw my eyebrows. This is the part of having alopecia that I struggle with at times because I used to have nice full eyebrows. Anyway, I got it together and drew a semi-perfect brow. I was satisfy with my work. I am contemplating getting my brows tattooed on, but I am liking the fact that I can draw any shape I want for my brows. So I am going to leave the tattooing on the back burner for a while. Anyway below is a pic of my look today with my new KA'OIR lipstick in Love U & a touch of gloss.

Wig Tip Monday: Protect Your Tresses from Heat

I am so against using excessive heat on lace wigs because it will damage the hair. If heat is necessary to style the unit, please use a heat protectant.  Heat protectants will help in creating a barrier between the hair and curling/flat iron to guard the cuticle from straight heat.

Tired of Glue & Tape? Try Glueless Lace Wigs…

Using glue and tape to attach your lace wig can be frustrating and messy. When I first started out wearing lace wigs, I used both glue and tape for my attachments and I would make a huge mess. It took a lot of time standing in the bathroom mirror trying to achieve the right attachment.  Another problem with using glue was the allergic reaction to some of them.

I know you may be thinking, how are you going to wear your lace unit without glue and tape. Well I am here to tell you that yes you can wear your lace units without all the glue and tape. Couture Lace Crowns offers Glueless lace wigs and you can have a custom wig designed with adjustable straps.

Glueless lace wigs offers the same benefits as the full lace wig. You can still achieve the undetectable look with the Glueless wigs. I have been wearing Glueless lace wigs for a while and I love it because it is easy and simple to apply as well as wearing. If you are in the early stages of Alopecia Areata, Glueless Lace wigs are perfect to wear when getting the cortisone shots or applying oils and creams.

Caring for your Glueless lace wig is less expensive than the full lace because you do not have to remove the glue & tape residue. To shop or customize your Glueless Lace Wig, visit www.couturelacecrowns.com

Wig Tip Monday: Avoid Excessive Shedding of Your Lace Unit

Follow these tips to avoid excessive shedding:
*Remember light shedding of your unit is normal, just like with natural hair.

  1. To avoid excessive shedding, always use a knot sealer after each and every wash for is reseals the knots and makes the strand stronger.
  2. Stay away from products that contain alcohol because it will cause the hair to dry out and lead to breakage and shedding.
  3. When sleeping in your unit, tie your hair up in a ponytail or braid it into two braids and cover your head with a satin/silk bonnet, and sleep on a satin pillow case for extra protection. Your satin bonnet can be purchased from Couture Lace Crowns.

Overactive Sebaceous Glands (Excessive Oiliness) & Alopecia

Excessive oiliness is something I struggle with on a daily basis. I never really had any problems with my skin until I developed alopecia areata thirteen years ago. My sebaceous glands became overactive causing excessive oil to be produced 20 times more than its normal production rate. For this reason, I rarely glue any of my lace wigs down with knowing my scalp will become oily in a matter of days. When I do glue my units down, I only have it attached for a week or less because the oil will start to break down the adhesive.  I wash my scalp everyday with Neutrogena T-Gel because the 2% Neutar helps to decrease oil production throughout the day. I am always trying new cosmetics, shampoos, and liquid adhesives that will help combat my oily skin.

If you have alopecia and oily skin, what products do you use to minimize the oil production?

Difference Between Open & Closed Cap Lace Front Wig

I was asked the other day what is the difference between an open cap and closed cap lace front wig. I thought that was a good question….especially for people who have hair loss. Both cap styles offer great benefits. I personally alternate between both cap styles throughout the year to give my full lace wigs a break.  The lace front wigs are more cost effective than the full lace wig. I usually recommend my clients to purchase both a full lace and lace front wig, that way they can have one as a backup while the other is being cleaned.

Lace Front Wig – Open Cap
The lace front open cap has between 2 to 5 inches of lace in the front where the hair is hand-tied one by one, adjustable straps in the rear, and combs can be sewn on side, crown, and back. This type of cap is great for the Spring & Summer months because it allows ventilation to the head to keep the scalp cool and comfortable. The open cap can also be sewn into braids if you want added stay put protection.  The lace front can be glued or taped to the front hairline (optional), but cannot be pulled up into a high ponytail.

Lace Front Wig - Closed Cap
This type of cap is similar and different from the open cap lace front wig. The wefted hair is sewn onto stretch material that is attached to lace in the front and rear along with having adjustable straps. I wear this cap style in the Fall & Winter months to keep my scalp nice and warm. With the lace in the rear, I can glue it to my nape to achieve a ponytail or updo hairstyle.

Wig Tip Monday - Less Heat = More Beauty

Just like with your real hair, too much heat can damage it. The same is true for the hair on a lace wig. To achieve the curls or waves you want, try using flexi rods or magnetic rollers. These items can be found at your local Walmart or Target.  This is one of the safest ways in keeping your unit damage-free and extended the life of the hair.
